Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Summer means a full slate of great rides and events for people who love biking!

From the end of June to mid-August, the BTA offers volunteer opportunities at seven major events in Portland. These events are the public face of the behind-the-scenes advocacy work we do, and a great opportunity to encourage people who might not be able to bike to work to get around by bike for fun. We'd love to have your help!

Read about the events below to find out how to sign up for a shift.

Sunday Parkways – June 21st, July 19th, August 16th 2009
North, Northeast and Southeast Portland

Sunday Parkways are 7-8 mile "temporary parks" along city streets connecting neighborhoods and residents in North, Northeast and Southeast Portland. Sunday Parkways gives Portlanders a chance to get out and be active right in their own neighborhood. Participants walk, bikd, roll, run, stroll, and roller blade along the route to activities in the parks as well as to nearby shops and businesses in the vicinity.

Questions? Contact Scott Lieuallen at (503) 226-0676 x22.

The Night Ride – July 11th, 2009
Portland's Union Station

This ride, formerly known as the Midsummer Night Ride, is a Portland classic: costumed participants will ride en masse through North and Northeast neighborhoods, entertained by fire jugglers, the Last Regiment drum corps, and the cheers of curious crowds come out to watch. The ride begins and ends at Union Station, where revelers will gorge on donuts before heading out to their next nighttime engagement.

Questions? Contact Scott Lieuallen at (503) 226-0676 x22.

Providence Bridge Pedal – August 9th, 2009
Downtown Portland

This is the biggest bike event in Portland (last year 17,000 people participated). The Bridge Pedal lets riders live out a car-free fantasy: biking across the bridges of Portland - from the Marquam to the Fremont - without a single car in the way! This is also the biggest BTA benefit of the summer. Volunteer before the ride or work as a course marshall – and get free admission to this year or next year’s event!

To sign up for a shift, contact Scott Lieuallen at (503) 226-0676 x22.

Tour de Fat - August 15th, 2009
Portland’s Waterfront Park

Live out your bartending fantasy – pour beer (or be the bouncer, checking IDs at the entrance) at this one-day summer festival on the Waterfront. Live bands (including the March Fourth Marching Band), a bike circus, and good beer from New Belgium Brewing, makers of Fat Tire Ale, make this a great party. Volunteers get a free pint and a t-shirt and a legitimate excuse to stay all day. Not that they have to.

To volunteer, contact Scott Lieuallen at (503) 226-0676 x22.

New Seasons BBQ Benefit - Sept. 5th & 6th, 2009
All New Seasons locations

On Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00 pm, all New Seasons locations will be serving up $3 hot dogs and veggies dogs and $3 lemonade. 100% of the money raised this weekend goes to the BTA! We need volunteers to help our staff serve at a New Seasons in your neighborhood. Find your nearest store here.

To volunteer, contact Scott Lieuallen at (503) 226-0676 x22.
