1896 cyclist's road map. Covering the Portland metro area before cars.

Reprinted by the Oregon Historical Society, this 19th-century map (measuring 23” x 29”) offers a fascinating and richly detailed glimpse back in time when bikes ruled the roads. Looks like Portland’s been a bike-friendly city for quite some time!

Of course, what passes for friendly has changed a little since then. One ad for the Tualatin Hotel, for example, archly beckons “wheelmen’s wants supplied,” and the map features other ads for a cigar shop and a “true nerve tonic” to “restore your lost vitality.” We’ll keep our tonics to microbrews, thank you, but wouldn’t mind the elbow room on the roads our ancestors enjoyed!
