Gearshift keeps on shiftin'

Last week three Beaverton students known as Team Gearshift came to the BTA's office and gave their fantastic presentation on the importance of bicycle safety and their solution for the First Lego League competition.

Team Gearshift wowed BTA staff with their knowledge about how social media can help build the bicycle movement.
During the fall hundreds of teams researched and developed ideas around improving traffic safety for the Lego Robotics First Lego League. Team Gearshift chose bicycles as their focus. The team created a social network, bikepdx.ning.com, focused on biking around the Portland Metro area. The network allows members to post topics about safe techniques, upcoming rides and events, and great routes. The goal is to shift culture. With more people engaging in bicycling, there is more awareness and safer roads for bicycling.
Back in November, I had the opportunity to give a safety presentation at a BTA fundraising event the team hosted out in Beaverton. It was a lot of fun and it was very obvious by the large turnout that the team is shifting culture around bicycles.
After winning the regional competition, the team will compete in the state finals this weekend. Good luck, guys and keep up the great work!

Hm, I'm not sure I understand. What is Team Gearshift? I went to the ning site but still wasn't sure. Is it a school project?
Team Gearshift is three Beaverton students who built the social media site for a school project. Check out the photo we just added to the post!
I'm a teacher in New York curious about other school systems' bike initiatives for middle-school level students. Do you have any info about this school, the teacher who sponsors this, the school's website, etc? I've included a site made by one of my students about the program I run in Brooklyn.
