Help! Flugtag is coming!

Water, sucrose, glucose, sodium citrates, carbon dioxide, taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, inositol, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, caramel and riboflavin…you may know it as RedBull.
Teams of 5 everyday people to building homemade, human-powered flying machines, taking them out onto a 30-foot high deck on the Willamette, doing a skit, and then hurling themselves off the deck in hopes of achieving flight…you may know it as Flugtag, RedBull's awesome urban spectacle of creative stupidity.
The picture above is from Portland's last Flugtag in 2004 and this Saturday, August 2nd, it'll be back.
If there is one thing I've learned about this town, it's that Portlanders love watching other people do stupid things. If there's two things I've learned, it's that they love to ride bikes. Red Bull expects 50,000 people to attend Flugtag this year. Roughly 6% of trips made in close-in Portland are made by bike. I did some math.
…and I figured out that there'll be a lot of bikes there–at least 2,000. Luckily, the good folks at RedBull thought of that and asked the BTA to organize valet bike parking for the event. So that's what we're doing. The largest bike parking corral we've ever managed…and we could use some help! If you'd like to help volunteer, we could use some help from 1:30 – 4:00pm and from 3:45 – 6:00pm. All volunteers get a sweet $7 gift certificate for Hot Lips Pizza (thanks Hot Lips!) and plenty of RedBull (which I hear makes a great chain-lube if you're not into drinking it).
If you're intersted in helping out, shoot me an email.
