BTA Volunteers Raise Awareness in Bend

Volunteers in Bend teamed up with Cascade Couriers this past weekend, July 12-13, to raise awareness of bike safety and the BTA at the Bend Summer Festival and Energy Independence Fair.
Visitors at the downtown festival could "spin to win" to test their knowledge of the rules of the road and learn about the BTA. Popular questions discussed the best way to negotiate a roundabout on a bike, the helmet law for kids under 16, and the BTA's continuing efforts to pass legislation that protects cyclists and pedestrians. Volunteers also distributed nearly 100 copies of the Oregon Bicyclist Manual to booth visitors, and one lucky person will be receiving a pair of Specialized Optics sunglasses worth $110 for taking the quiz and learning more about the BTA and Cascade Couriers.
"It was great opportunity to educate cyclists and motorists, one-on-one, in a non-confrontational setting, " said volunteer Eric Chu. "People were really happy to see the cycling community here in Bend is taking safety seriously, especially with a lot of criticism being directed at cyclists this summer."
Special thanks to Pedro's, Bend Bike 'N' Sport, Squirt Lube, Hutch's Bicycles, Sagebrush Cycles, Mug Revolution, 53×11 Coffee, Webcyclery, bikemecca.com, and Swanson Thomas & Coon for rewarding participants with great prizes and helping to remind everyone of the necessity to Share the Road and ride and drive safely.
In addition, the BTA and Cascade Couriers booth arrived and left completely under human power, courtesy of an eight-foot bike trailer, pedaled by Daniel Brewster of Cascade Couriers. Ride on!
