Photo Essay on Dutch Streets

The sun is out and our streets are packed with cyclists, skateboarders, those on assisted devices, and people on foot. Do we have a place for everyone on our streets? Are our cities streets complete? Many argue no and advocate for changing our streets to accommodate all users safely (I wonder if this would reduce some of the recent user conflicts). But what do complete streets look like? We have some excellent examples in Portland, but there are many ways streets can be configured to provide safe and comfortable passage for cyclists, pedestrians, and cars.
As the director of Willamette Pedestrian Coalition I thought it would be interesting to look at how others fit all users into their streets. My husband and I have put together a photo essay of a recent trip. A link to “Complete Streets in The Netherlands and Luxembourg” is on the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition website.
As the Portland metro region moves toward a street system that accommodates all modes of transportation, I look forward to seeing American ingenuity can be inspired by Europeans ideas and create streets that are safe and comfortable for everyone, regardless of your age or mode of transportation.
