Two weeks ago, on one of the first hot, sunny days, we hosted 52 teachers, parent volunteers, city officials and interested others from as far away as Ashland and Hermiston to a workshop in Portland. Participants learned how to put on a successful Walk and Bike to School Day and how to plan activities throughout the year to increase walking and biking to school. We also introduced our new k-8 curriculum package: Navigating Neighbourhoods. This curriculum addresses the need for the introduction and progression of transportation education. It highlights roles and responsibilities of being a member of the transportation system and personal and community effects of making certain choices as we travel. Feedback from the workshop was great and also helpful in making plans for better workshops in more locations.
We had presentations from seasoned Walk to School Day organizers, Laura Siddons and Katharine Lawrence and expert Safe Routes to School coordinator, Stephanie Noll. And thank goodness there was time for a walk by the river. We are promoting walking and biking, after all!! Lots of brainstorming and ideas were shared on how to best promote the day and walking and biking throughout the year.
