Acting US Surgeon General awards BSE program

Acting US Surgeon General Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, MD, MPH, visited Portland yesterday where he bestowed on our Bike Safety Education program the Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future Award. The award was given in recognition for our work to help prevent the childhood obesity epidemic by encouraging children to be more physically active.
Dr. Galson also took a brief bike ride 
with a group of students from Harriett Tubman Young Women's Leadership Academy where our bike safety curriculum is being integrated into the school curriculum under the leadership of PE teacher Kathy Smith.
The Bike Safety Education curriculum was written by BTA Executive Director Scott Bricker, with input from many community partners and experts, and has been used to teach over 40,000 students throughout Oregon to be more active and ride more safely. The curriculum was previously recognized for its outstanding contribution to bicycling with the Bicycle Education Leadership Award by the League of American Bicyclists.
At a Public Health Round Table discussion following the ride Dr. Galson also went on to proclaim the Bicycle Transportation Alliance as one of the organizations that is leading the way in providing unique and successful solutions to the increasing problems associated with childhood overweight and obesity. He recognized both the BTA's Bike Safety Education program (and Safe Routes, in general) and Ecotrust's Farm to School program as two models for the entire nation to use for increasing physical activity and promoting healthy eating habits for school children.
