Gas and anti-tax lobbyists attack the Portland Safe, Sound and Green Program

Yesterday, Oregon Petroleum Association lobbyist Paul Romain announced that he will attempt to refer Portland's Safe, Sound and Green Streets program to voters - after accepting a compromise from Commissioner Sam Adams and promising that he wouldn't! And after the city council approved it. Read the BikePortland story for more background.
In recent months the bicycling community has suffered tragic losses and responded in force to push for new safety measures, shifts in enforcement practices, and passage of this program, which would fund street repairs and a record number of safety improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians.
We're furious at this gas lobbyist's duplicity. We will launch into overdrive to get these safety improvements to pass, one way or another, because this is probably the single most important bike safety issue of 2008 for Portlanders.

We will keep you up to date and there will be additional calls to action.

I don't live in Portland so I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have to say that I wouldn't support putting a street tax on water bills either, and I'm as anti-car-head as they come. Resisting voter referral only makes it look like you think the thing can't pass on its merits.
