After 2 meetings of stakeholders, residents, businesses, bicycle advocates, pedestrian advocates, PDOT and ODOT, a decision was finally reached for the question of how to get cyclists safely from the SE Ankeny bike boulevard, to the Burnside bridgehead. Late last month, several options were forwarded to Commissioner Adams to make a final decision on the bike connections to the bridge once it becomes a couplet.
All of the options had significant safety, monetary and community concerns associated with them, so reaching a consensus was not an easy process. In the end, Commissioner Adams considered the input of all involved, weighed against the need for safe bicycle access to the bridge, and made the following decision:
• Provide a bike lane on the North side of Couch between 6th and MLK
• Remove seven parking spaces on the North side of Couch between 6th and MLK.
• Provide pull outs for loading or six parking spaces on the North side of Couch between 6th and MLK.
• Narrow the sidewalk width from twelve feet to seven feet adjacent to the parking pull outs on the North side of Couch between 6th and MLK.
