Pedestrian safety enforcement operations getting underway!

As the weather window opens and sunny days grow more frequent, one of BTA's valuable programs is getting increasingly active. With a grant from ODOT, BTA funds pedestrian safety operations throughout the state by offering mini-grants to law enforcement agencies who successfully apply for this program. With mini-grant funds, law enforcement officers undertake safety operations which are a valuable tool for educating all roadway users and pedestrians on current laws.
In towns throughout the state officers post highly visible signage and contact media so that operations are well-publicized and highly visible. Officers then stop vehicles - and in some cases, pedestrians - who are not following the law and either give warnings or citations. The goal is to educate all drivers and pedestrians of pedestrian laws in as safe a manner possible.
Twenty-four agencies were awarded grants this year and one (Amity Police Department) has already completed two operations with another scheduled this month. This years recipients are: Amity, Astoria, Aurora, Burns, Carlton, Coos Bay, Gold Beach, Grants Pass, Hillsboro, Hood River County, Hood River, Independence, Jackson County, Lincoln City, Lincoln County, Medford, Newberg-Dundee, North Bend, Ontario, Port Orford, Prineville, Stayton, Umatilla and Yamhill.
Many thanks to ODOT Traffic Safety for awarding BTA the overall grant monies to fund these operations, and to all the officers and volunteers in the cities, towns and counties where operations will be taking place. Stay safe out there!
