Join hundreds of cyclists, Commissioner Sam Adams, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, and the Community Cycling Center for the annual Ride of Silence to honor cyclists who have been killed while bicycling.
Bicyclists from around Portland will take to the eastside streets Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in a Ride of Silence to honor bicycle riders who have been injured or killed while riding on Portland’s public roadways, as well as raise awareness of bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities. Gathering at the Community Cycling Center at 1700 NE Alberta, the bike riders will embark on a silent, slow speed bike ride passing by locations where cyclists have been killed.
Start: 7:00pm at the Community Cycling Center, 1700 NE Alberta
End: 8:45pm at Colonel Summers Park, SE 20th and SE Belmont
Ghost Bikes: The group will pass by ghost bikes, where cyclists were killed
The first Ride of Silence was organized in 2003 by Chris Phelan in Dallas, Texas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and killed. It is now an international event. Across the country and around the globe riders will gather to:
• HONOR those who have been injured or killed
• RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
• Ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
All Portland bicycle riders are invited. Riders wishing to join are asked to remain quiet, ride on the right side of the road along the route, and not exceed a speed limit of 12mph during the Ride of Silence. Riders are encouraged to bring black armbands or flowers to honor cyclists who have been killed.
