The Land of the Three to Six Hour Commute

Last week's New Yorker talks about the 3.5 million Americans who are extreme commuters — people who spend more than three hours a day commuting. An excerpt:
Roughly one out of every six American workers commutes more than forty-five minutes, each way…. The number of commuters who travel ninety minutes or more each way—known to the Census Bureau as “extreme commutersâ€â€”has reached 3.5 million, almost double the number in 1990.
Sadly, while the article discusses transit and vanpooling, it does not discuss bike commuting. Such is the New York bias. Today, Portland Transport covers an article about the health dangers of long car commutes.
