Seattle wants to catch Portland

A Seattle Times article reports today that Mayor Greg Nickels wants to triple the number of Seattle residents using bicycles to get around.
He unveiled the new Bicycle Master Plan on Wednesday, which contains a "wish list" of more than $240 million in bike projects. There is currently $27 million set aside for bike projects, but the Seattle transportation director says that more money will be sought for more improvements.
I visited Seattle (by Amtrak, with my bike) last fall and was pretty disappointed by the bike infrastructure (see my slightly snarky blog post about it) so I'm very excited to hear that Seattle's bike advocates are gaining traction and the mayor is making bike friendliness a high priority for the city. The city dreams of catching up to Portland - and I hope they do soon!

Oh, and the new mayor of Mexico City wants city officials to bike to work once a month. Check out the story:

Didn't former Portland Mayor Bud Clark have a similar campaign?
