100 Traffic Deaths in Fewer than 100 Days; SLOW DOWN

We're not yet 100 days into 2007, but we've already had 100 Oregonians lose their lives to traffic deaths. Speed was a factor in half those crashes.
When will we see Mothers Against Fast Driving? I don't know.
When will the police feel that they can ticket everyday speeders, and have those tickets upheld, instead of just ticketing those going more than 11 miles over the speed limit? I don't know.
From Oregon State Police Officers Association:
On April 3rd Oregon had it's [sic] 100th traffic fatality. A traffic crash occurs every 13 minutes and a fatality occurs every 18 hours in Oregon. Alcohol and drugs are involved in 40% of all crashes and speed is involved in over 50%. Nationally, the leading cause of death in for persons ages 3 to 33 is a traffic crash.
As warmer weather arrives there will be more people on our roadways. The Oregon State Police Officers' Association urges you to drive safely and always wear seat belts.

We don't have "mothers against speeding drivers", but we do have "Traffic SafeTea Party" the third Thursday of each month. Cyclists and pedestrians can join us at a prearranged spot for tea and bikey fellowship while we hold signs asking drivers to slow down as they travel through our neighborhood. Check the Shift calendar or bikeportland for each month’s location. Last month at 39th and Hawthorne only 2 people showed up… If you'd like to get this message across to motorists, please join us and spread the word.
