Portland's SE Foster Bike Boulevard on Its Way

Last Saturday, Commissioner Leonard (left) braved the cold to join several neighborhood activists, a couple of PDOT folks, and two BTA staff members as we surveyed the planned route for a bike boulevard alternative to SE Foster Road.
As noted by PDOT's Greg Raisman (below), the Bike Master Plan calls for bike lanes on Foster. Yet as Foster is a high-speed, high-crash facility, that may not be the best answer (Greg said that the lanes were "not possible" which is language I'd quibble with, but…)
As part of their one-time funds, PDOT is planning on creating a bike boulevard route through the neighborhood by installing a couple of signal activators to cross SE 82nd and SE Foster (at 56th), improving signage, and doing a "gap analysis" to figure out how hard it is for bikes to cross some other streets, all by the end of June.
It was a bitterly cold ride, but it's exciting to see this improvement. Hopefully it's a route that Commissioner Leonard can use at times, as he bikes to meetings.
As part of our bike boulevard work, we're thrilled to see new boulevards being created. This piece may not include many diverters, as the winding route may discourage car use on its own.

Thanks for the nice article, Evan.
Just an FYI: It's not "Greg Raisman" who said bike lanes were not possible on Foster. The conclusion of the Foster Road Transportation and Streetscape Plan (adopted in 2003, and supported by the BTA) concluded that it was not feasible. I was simply reporting that conclusion.

Thanks again for joining us on the ride and for the nice write-up. We're very excited to move this project forward.
Thanks.
