2005 Metro Traffic: 155 Fatalities, 15,644 Injured

According to Metro, the Portland-area regional government, in 2005 the tri-county area saw 155 people die in traffic crashes, while 15,644 people were injured.
The majority of these people were in cars, which are involved in over 43,000 deaths a year across the U.S., but many were pedestrians and cyclists.
We don't think the death toll is acceptable, and it's a big reason why our Oregon legislative agenda focuses on improving traffic safety. While our bills are aimed at vulnerable roadway users like pedestrians and cyclists, they would encourage more aware and safer driving, meaning benefits for everyone.

Update: It's entirely unclear to me whether this double-counts by reporting both the county and city data (for example, it's hard to imagine there were 37 fatalities in Multnomah County outside of Portland, as 80% of the county's population is within the city)
