On Wednesday, Brian Wilson, 12, was hit when he biked onto the highway near Glide, OR. He's in a medically-induced coma right now, with lots of internal injuries.
According to the State Police, Brian played on his bike a lot, sometimes recklessly, and he and neighborhood kids had built a jump at the base of the hill right by a stop sign where landing zone was in the highway.
The Police have done a full crash reconstruction of the scene and see no reason to press charges, as the driver, a nurse in the VA hospital, was neither speeding nor intoxicated.
Our thoughts are with the Wilson family, and with Brian.
From the Oregon State Police:
A 12-year old Idleyld Park boy was critically injured late Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a pickup on Highway 138E in Idleyld Park. The bicyclist was wearing a protective helmet and daylight conditions were still present at the time of the crash.
On October 18, 2006 at approximately 5:50 p.m., a 2002 Ford pickup driven by ANTHONY FISCHER, age 46, from Roseburg, was westbound on Highway 138E near milepost 21 when a bicycle ridden by BRIAN H. WILSON, age 12, from Idleyld Park, entered the highway into the path of the pickup from Idleyld Park Lane. The right front corner of the pickup struck the bicycle tossing it and WILSON forward.
FISCHER and his passenger, JOHN VAN COTT, from Roseburg, rendered first aid until medical personnel from Glide Fire Department arrived.
WILSON was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg with serious injuries. He was later transferred by helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where he is reported to be in critical condition as of Thursday morning (editor's note: still so on Friday morning). WILSON was wearing a protective helmet.
FISCHER and VAN COTT were not injured.
"There is no evidence of excessive speed or other factors involving the pickup's driver," said Oregon State Police (OSP) Lieutenant Douglas Ladd, Area Commander at the Roseburg OSP office. "Our investigation will continue and be reviewed with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office, but at this time there appears to be little the pickup driver could have done to avoid the bicyclist."
OSP troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office, with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist, are continuing the investigation. Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Glide Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The highway was closed for about one hour before being reopened to one lane. The highway was fully opened about midnight.
