Bicycle, pedestrian and skate advocates gathered last Friday to celebrate Car Free Day, creating a European-style plaza on SW Ankeny between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, downtown. The celebration featured an alternative-fuels consumption contest, with day-old but delicious fuel donated by nearby VooDoo Doughnut.

It's been a hard summer, and we've lost way too many cyclists in crashes. Talk to any elected official about transportation and they'll probably tell you this: safety is their top concern. The evidence, however, shows otherwise.

On Friday, Michael Kalan of Portland was killed while bicycling in Washington County. Discussions on the OBRA list serve point out how dangerous this intersection is, but the cyclist had the right-of-way and the driver failed the yield, citing sun in her eyes.

In Newport, a driver drifted her car onto the shoulder and killed Jere Quinn from Roberts, Montana, who was vacationing at Beverly Beach State Park with his wife. The driver may have been sleepy. Our thoughts are with the Quinn family.
