Number of Co-Sponsors for Bike Commute Act Doubles; Smith Absent

At this Saturday's Bike Summit, one of the mentions in my speech that got the most applause was our work to pass the Bicycle Commuters' Benefits Act to give bicyclists the same tax-free benefits transit users get for riding to work.
Since we last wrote, Richard Durbin (D-Ill), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI) and Norm Coleman (R-MN) joined Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), and Susan Collins (R-ME) as co-sponsors of Sen. Wyden's Bicycle Commuters Benefit Act (Senate Bill 2635).
Sadly, Oregon's other Senator (Sen. Smith) has stated that he's not going to be joining the group. There's a possibility that a piece of a larger energy bill will include provisions to encourage cycling — stay tuned over the next couple weeks.
Until then, you can contact Sen. Smith and let his office know that it's time to get on board!
