Remembering Brenda with a legacy of safety for the Springwater Corridor

Some of you may remember the death of Brenda Elliot a year ago on the Springwater Corridor. At 252nd Avenue, she should have stopped, but didn't. After the crash, her brother-in-law Mike Tobin went out to look at the site and discovered all kinds of safety problems that contributed to the crash:
- Brush obscured the stop sign on the trail
- The speed limit on 252nd was too high for a trail crossing
- The crosswalk wasn't marked or signed
Mike has been working for the last year to get these problems fixed. The BTA has been supportive of his efforts, and I'm pleased to say that Multnomah County has fixed every identified problem.
Brenda's death was a tragedy, and she is missed by friends and family, but great good has come from it that makes the region's most popular trail much safer for all users. This was a case of effective advocates and a county agency that did the right thing. I'm proud to have played a role in helping this along.
