Bike + Canoe = Whole Lotta Looks

Lucky me. This Sunday morning I woke up and saw it was a sunny day in Portland. I called a friend asking what to do, and he told me that his friend was off on a bike canoe trip and might be open to company.
Hurray! I met up with Jim and Celine and we biked off to Smith and Bybee Lakes. With a canoe in tow. Ah, the smiles it brought, the heads it turned (I told Jim that "once the guy in the silver convertible is staring at you, you know you have a sweet ride"), the kids' mouths it caused to gape… I couldn't resist telling one four-year-old on his bike, "one day, you'll have a canoe behind your bike too…"
'Twas a joyous use of appropriate technology, realizing that you can haul 120 pounds easily enough on a bike, even if it's a canoe. We passed someone who had converted a bike trailer into a returnable bottle hauler, and biked around town with it, and both admired each other's get-up.
I also appreciated some of the trails I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't been on, such as the Peninsula Crossing Trail. All in all, an ode to the joys of my job, and the bicycle.

Photos of a previous trip I wasn't on, which includes the photo in this post.

Great to hear about this Evan. That long load must really take some getting used to.
I wonder if it presents any clearance problems as surely trail designers don't consider that length of vehicle when planning and designing facilities.
Glad you got to check out Smith/Bybee by bike too. That is a real gem of a ride, and perfect for families.
see you out there!
I am getting a canoe (anyone know of one for sale cheap?) and want to convert my old bike trailer into a carrier!! See you at Smith/Bybee.
I am interseted too in touring with my Mongoose MTN bike trailering a Winonah 19' kavlar Itasca. But I want to do more than just pedal and padel– I want to sail. Check out http://www.sailboatsto go.com. It would awesome to explore under the power o muscle and wind!
