Bicycle Congestion?

It was Sunday afternoon and I was running late to my basketball game in SE Portland. I was eager to play so I jumped on my road bike and sped off for the Esplanade.
Traffic-wise Sundays are slow days, perfect for low-traffic bicycling. With the weather turning, more and more people are leaving the car behind and rediscovering the joy of getting out in fresh air. So many people that my speedy bike route was congested with baby strollers, families walking dogs, roller bladers, kids bicycling, and grandmas walking slowly. I was stuck in traffic!

My first impulse was aggravation; we’ve all sat in trafficjams and all you want to do is move. However, I was on a bike and instantly was able to ease into a pleasant river ride.
Ideally multiuse trails would be bigger, they would have segregated sections for faster moving bicyclists and slower moving pedestrians.
However on these congested trails, speedy cyclists just have to slow down; avoid these trails if you are seeking to maintain your 90 pedal revolutions per minute workout.
I encourage everyone to slow it down and enjoy a wonderfully relaxing weekend cruise on your way to the park, the farmer’s market, or a friend’s house.
