Walk and Bike to School

Dubbed Oregon Walk + Bike to School, our encouragement campaign offers program activities and events for kids and parents to inspire them to walk and bike to school. The campaign was launched in August 2004 at a press event featuring the US Surgeon General, Nike’s Brand President, Portland’s Superintendent of Schools, and soccer star Tiffeny Milbrett.

We offer technical support to help communities coordinate and promote International Walk + Bike to School Day, Walk + Bike Wednesdays, Walk + Bike Across America and other encouragement programs throughout Oregon.

In addition, the BTA is a lead member of the Oregon Walk + Bike to School Committee, which coordinates and provides resources and trainings for statewide walking and biking encouragement events.

Oregon Walk + Bike To School Day

This international event takes place on the first Wednesday in October each year.  Over 3.6 million kids and adults participated worldwide in 2005, including over 10,500 kids in 63 Oregon schools. With major support from the Oregon Walk + Bike to School Committee, the BTA and Willamette Pedestrian Coalition help schools around the state to make this event a success.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Willamette Pedestrian Coalition provide:

  • Trainings for Oregon Walk + Bike to School Day event coordinators
  • Resources for Oregon Walk + Bike to School Day event coordinators, including the Walk + Bike to School Day Playbook
  • Coordination of Oregon Walk + Bike to School Day Activities
  • Production of Oregon Walk + Bike to School Day Incentives
  • Statewide Promotion of Oregon Walk + Bike to School Day
