Safe Routes to School Director

Description             

The Safe Routes to School Director will oversee the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s statewide Safe Routes to School, Bike Safety Education, and Pedestrian Safety Education programs. S/he will assist the Safe Routes to School Program Manager on Portland-based programs.

Primary areas of activity include:

  • Supervising bike safety and pedestrian safety instructors throughout Oregon, including hiring and training
  • Representing the BTA’s youth programs across the state
  • Raising funds for bike safety education and Walk and Bike to School programs
  • Managing fee-for-service contracts with ODOT and other government agencies
  • Managing the BTA’s Pedestrian Enforcement Grants project
  • Leading the long-term thinking and planning around the BTA’s efforts to get young people to bike
  • Coordinating Walk and Bike to School Day efforts across the state
  • Creating strong relationships with decisionmakers and bureaucratic partners
  • Communicating with the public about the BTA’s youth programs

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Experience in supervision of employees
  • Experience in managing large programs
  • Experience working with corporate and individual donors
  • Experience with government contracts
  • Skills in training community leaders about new initiatives
  • Knowledge of youth development, education, bicycling and bicycle facilities design
  • Experience working with the media
  • Ability to travel frequently around the state
  • The ability to write and speak clearly and fluently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage many tasks at one time and meet deadlines
  • Experience supervising and working with volunteers
  • Good computer skills (Microsoft Office, Mac OS X, FileMaker Pro, blogging)
  • A sense of humor and the ability to work as a part of a team

Salary and Benefits

$37,000-$44,000 depending on experience. Health, dental, vision, retirement, bike commuting benefits. Four weeks paid vacation/sick leave to start.
