Position Announcement:
Executive Director

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) is a non-profit 5000 member organization with a mission to create healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safer, more convenient and more accessible. Support for bicycling is progressing and the organization is poised to help make more progress towards solving some of the universal challenges to health, livability, and the environment. The organization represents all of Oregon and the region of SW Washington. In Portland alone, there is an average of 17,500 daily bike commuters.

The Executive Director will be accountable for advancing the vision and mission of the organization and will serve as the face of the organization for advocacy, coalition building, fundraising and communications related activities. In addition to requisite strengths in lobbying, advocacy and policy development, the Executive Director will provide leadership to expand capacity, develop team capabilities, and maximize resources to achieve the long range vision.

Accountabilities:

  • Work collaboratively with board, staff, political leaders, citizens, and partner organizations to develop long range strategies that will address and advance statewide active transportation, health, education, environment, and livability initiatives.
  • Provide leadership to unify a diverse statewide membership base as advocates in support of advancing the livability of communities through expansion of safe and environmentally friendly bicycling initiatives.
  • Provide strategy and oversight to achieve balanced and sustainable revenue growth for the organization.
  • Provide oversight for existing advocacy, outreach and education programs.
  • Serve as the organization’s chief communications officer and as the motivating force for staff, Board, partners, media, political leaders and national cohorts.
  • Engage legislators, public health experts, business leaders, transportation planners, and transportation providers in meaningful discussions to further goals and to create new opportunities for the organization.
  • Foster collaborative mission-driven workplace environment that engages, challenges, and supports team members in reaching inspired levels of performance.

Requisite Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 12 years of business experience that includes some non-profit leadership experience preferably in a constituency-based advocacy-oriented organization.
  • Demonstrated strategic growth orientation, board development, team leadership, communications, and fiscal management capabilities.
  • A definitive passion for bicycle transportation and authentic interest in creating more livable, healthy, and sustainable communities.
