Support HB 3314 – Increasing Protection for Vulnerable Roadway Users

Dear Representative ____________:

Every year over 40,000 Americans are killed in roadway crashes, and many more are seriously injured. Every year, traffic crashes are the top cause of injury and death for children ages 1 – 17 and costs the public billions of dollars.

I urge you to support HB 3314 that would protect the rights of all roadway users that includes “vulnerable roadway users” and auto drivers, by creating a penalty employed when a vehicle operator injures or kills a roadway user and is convicted of Careless Driving.

Currently, drivers that injure or kill vulnerable users and are convicted of careless driving simply receive a traffic fine. However an aggravated level of culpability defines careless driving, and aggravated sentence should ensue.

This bill would protect all roadway users from these careless users of the roadway by creating a Driver Improvement Program that includes traffic safety education, community service, and a physical to ensure that drivers are safe to be on the road.

I believe this bill is a sensible step to increasing the safety of our roadways. This bill creates reasonable penalties for situations where careless behavior leads to tragic consequences.

I urge you to support HB 3314.

Yours truly,
